Mystery Mania Brings Clever Sleuthing to the iPhone

Sunday, November 8th, 2009

We’ve stumbled upon a little gem of an iPhone game. Mystery Mania, adds heart to any iDevice with its deserted mansion, 27 riddle-tastic rooms, and amnesia-suffering robot. Being released on EA’s mobile site a few months ago, Mystery Mania has arrived for the iPhone and iPod touch in full finger tapping glory. You’ll have at least a couple hours of fun with this great game.

The backbone of the game is its main character F8. As a recently revived robot, F8 soon realizes he has no memory. Players must help F8 discover his past and reason for being by guiding him on a search for truth. Each room within the daunting mansion is chock full of clues that must be deciphered in order to exit to the next. Some rooms have two or more exits that lead to different areas of the house. Every room’s mystery must be solved in order to complete the game and solve F8’s puzzling past. Along the way, we found ourselves really enjoying F8 and his clueless manner. He’ll do whatever you want and go wherever you direct him, even if that means getting electrocuted, bitten by a dog, or kicked by an angry lad. F8 is up for any challenge and always displays good sportsmanship.

In Mystery Mania, you won’t find much in the way of tutorials or instructions. But that is part of the game’s charm. The sole method to help F8 solve each riddle is simply by using logic. Items are placed around each level. Use some objects in certain sequences to activate others. For instance, a candle on the wall can light a burner on a table. Chemicals can then, and only then, be combined in a vessel atop the burner. Make F8 drink the resulting potion and watch what happens. The process of solving the mini mysteries can be tricky at times. But we found ourselves solving them after a few attempts. The key is to be observant. Study the room to recognize some hints EA has thrown in.

In the way of graphics, Mystery Mania will remind you of an online flash game. Vivid color look great, but the sets feel a little flat. The visual department isn’t much to write your friends about. No spoken audio is included. Therefore, F8 interacts with his surrounding acquaintances by way of dialogue boards. Eerie music has bee provided by EA. It fits the whole mood of the game. If a phone call comes in while you’re playing, Mystery Mania will solve your progress so that you can return later.

If your looking for an iPhone game that will stump you, then surprise you, and top it all off with a feeling of gratification, Mystery Mania may fit your bill. It has all the ingredients of a classic detective drama all attractively wrapped up in one title. Right now, Mystery Mania is found on the App Store at a price of $3.99. The only complaint with have is that the adventure is over so fast. Here’s hoping EA throws some new levels into an upcoming update. However, as it stands, the game is one mystery that will leave you chuckling for some time.
