Students hopeful to begin a career in computers and technology usually aren't sure which route to follow, let alone which area to build their qualifications around. Flicking through a list of IT job-titles is no use whatsoever. The majority of us don't really appreciate what the neighbours do for a living - so what chance do we have in understanding the ins and outs of a specific IT job. Contemplation on several issues is most definitely required when you need to reveal the right answers:

- Personality factors as well as your interests - the sort of work-related things please or frustrate you.

- Are you driven to get certified for a certain motive - for instance, are you looking at working from home (being your own boss?)?

- Does salary have a higher place on your list of priorities than other factors.

- Many students don't properly consider the amount of work demanded to achieve their goals.

- You need to appreciate the differences between each individual training area.

Because of the great skills shortage in the United Kingdom even when times are hard, there isn't a great need to make too much of this option though. It isn't so complicated as you might think to secure the right work as long as you're correctly trained and certified.

You would ideally have help with your CV and interview techniques though; additionally, we would recommend everyone to work on polishing up their CV the day they start training - don't delay until you've qualified. Quite often, you'll land your initial job whilst still on the course (sometimes when you've only just got going). If your course details aren't on your CV (and it hasn't been posted on jobsites) then you don't stand a chance! The best services to help get you placed are generally specialised and independent recruitment consultants. As they will get paid by the employer when they've placed you, they'll work that much harder to get a result.

Do ensure you don't conscientiously work through your course materials, only to stop and leave it up to everyone else to find you a job. Get off your backside and start looking for yourself. Invest as much energy and enthusiasm into securing your new role as it took to get qualified.

An area that's often missed by new students considering a training program is 'training segmentation'. This is essentially how the program is broken down into parts to be delivered to you, which can make a dramatic difference to the point you end up at. Students often think it makes sense (when study may take one to three years to achieve full certification,) for many training providers to send out one section at a time, as you achieve each exam pass. But: What if you find the order prescribed by the provider doesn't suit you. You may find it a stretch to finalise all the elements inside of their particular timetable?

In a perfect world, you'd ask for every single material to be delivered immediately - enabling you to have them all to come back to in the future - irrespective of any schedule. Variations can then be made to the order that you complete each objective if you find another route more intuitive.
